Here I go, Here I come!  My Foggy but Exciting Future in Using Technology.

By: Renee Guerriero

My view of my future is a little like a dream to me, when I envision it.  Some parts of my future are bright and clear and others are a little foggy.  However, fear not!  The foggy part is only due to the fact that I can’t even begin to imagine the technological advances I will see.  I think I will see these advances not only in my career but even in the near future!  Just a few days ago I sat through a training about a new program, Michigan College Access Network.  Using this program you can apply to several colleges at once, using one application.   The program creates a resume for you, helps you find scholarships, helps you compare and choose a college and more.  It is fairly new but as I sat there I couldn’t help but think, “What will all of this look like in 15 years when I am helping my daughter choose a college?”  I am excited and anxious for the fog to be cleared in that portion of life.  I want to know now, what technology I will get to use in my classroom to enhance learning.  Looking into my future as a lifelong learner focuses on being a leader in the use of using technology no matter what it is!

When I was in the tenth grade my school got the internet, I was in a technology class.  My teacher was very knowledgeable and I feel like I was hooked on technology right at the right age.  I didn’t grow up using it so it was all new and exciting to me.  I think that using heuristics carries me through many technological issues.  I think heuristics can also be linked to patience and I think that I do well with having patience for technology.  Because of assignments I have had in my masters programs I feel like I can do anything I wish to for my classes, I have a broad knowledge of technology.  I would never claim to be an expert in any area of technology but I am willing to do what it takes to figure out what I need to.

My experiences in the MSU masters degree program have prepared me to continue to keep a focus on what is important and how to use technology to enhance learning.  I envision myself continuing to learn about how to use technology as a tool to increase engagement and success in my curriculum and don’t worry, I will remember not to just, “use technology, to use it.”  These experiences in this masters program have influenced my approach to teaching.  Because of everything I have learned over the last couple of years, I am certain that lifelong learning, especially in being a leader in the use of technology will be important to me.

We have a very hard-working and technology driven media specialist at my school.  I have a lot of respect for her, she has made my school one of the leaders in technology use in northern Michigan.  She is very supportive and will find ways to get teachers whatever technology we need in our classrooms. She will be a great resource for me as I continue on my lifelong learning pathway.   I am certain that through our media specialist and our ISD I will have the opportunity to master any new technologies that I wish to.  I will be sure to do whatever it takes to get the technology I need to support learning in my classroom.

I know that one other teacher at my school has taken online courses through MSU.  I believe that she and I will be the go-to people for online learning.  She is already teaching her math classes online through Moodle.  I have several assignments on Moodle right now and will continue to use the program.  Another thing I see becoming important to schools is websites for each course.  I know that there only three other teachers who have a website at my school.  I look forward to completing my website and sharing it with students and staff.  I believe in the future all teachers will be required to have a website for their classes.

I see teachers all over my school using technology.  My principal is very supportive of technology use so I know my school will continue to lead those around us in this area.  The impact that learning with the support of technology is having on our schools is amazing!  High school students are loving it and taking advantage of the opportunities they have.  Students who are younger will probably expect and anticipate the use of technology in every class.  The world is changing and I am excited to consider that I might be able to be a leader in the use of technology in education.
